UPDATE: Prospect reopens in Newmarket following police investigation

The road was closed for several hours Thursday as police responded to a person in crisis

York Regional Police have blocked off Prospect Street in between Pearson and Gorham streets.

UPDATE, Aug. 12, 3 p.m.: York Regional Police is reporting that Prospect Street has been reopened following its closure for several hours as officers responded to a person in crisis.

Prospect Street, between Gorham and Pearson streets, is closed in Newmarket due to an ongoing police investigation Thursday afternoon.

Officers responded to a call for a person in crisis at about 12:30 p.m. Aug. 12, and there is no concern for public safety, according to York Regional Police Const. Maniva Armstrong.

"Specially trained resources are on scene, including negotiators," she added.

Armstrong is advising the public to avoid the area and take an alternate route.

There is a heavy police presence in the area, including the emergency response unit, and ambulances.
