Police investigating suspicious package in Georgina (UPDATE)

UPDATE: Package posed no threat to safety; Old Homestead Road and Forestry Drive are open to traffic again

UPDATE, 4:30 p.m.: The roads that were closed for the police investigation of a suspicious package and vehicle earlier this afternoon in Pefferlaw have been opened. 

The package has been safely removed, according to York Regional Police.

The investigation confirmed there was no concern for safety.

Drivers are urged to continue to avoid the area of Old Homestead Road and Forestry Drive in Georgina as York Regional Police investigate the report of a suspicious package.

Old Homestead from Station Road to Weirs Sideroad, and Station Road from Old Homestead to Kenneth Street are closed for the ongoing investigation.

A suspicious vehicle is also involved in the investigation, which began earlier this afternoon, police said.

There is no immediate concern for public safety, according to police.

A large police presence is visible, as well as Georgina Fire and York Region Paramedic Services members, in the Pefferlaw neighbourhood.
