Police investigating suspicious cellphone tower fire in Newmarket

It is unknown when the fire started or how it was extinguished, police say

Investigators with the York Regional Police #1 District Criminal Investigations Bureau are seeking witnesses following a suspicious fire in the Town of Newmarket.

On Wednesday, April 21, 2021, shortly after 1 p.m., York Regional Police were called to the area of Leslie Street and Crowder Boulevard in response to an arson at a cellphone tower site.

York Central Fire Services attended the scene and determined the fire had gone out prior to their arrival. Investigators confirmed suspicious activity was detected earlier in the morning, around 2 a.m. It is unknown when the fire started or how it was extinguished.

Fortunately, no one was injured.

Investigators believe the fire was intentionally set. The scene is being held for further investigation by the Office of the Fire Marshal.

Investigators are appealing to anyone who witnessed suspicious activity in the area, or anyone with residential video surveillance that may have captured suspicious activity, to please come forward.
