UPDATE: Richmond Hill man identified as cyclist killed in collision in King

A 20-year-old Toronto man is charged with fail to stop causing death and dangerous driving causing death

UPDATE, July 25: 

A 54-year-old man from Richmond Hill is believed to be the cyclist killed in a collision in King yesterday morning, York Regional Police said.

A post-mortem examination will confirm his identity, police said.

Drake David Tye Paul, 20, of Toronto is charged with fail to stop causing death and dangerous driving causing death. 

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) continues its investigation, while York Regional Police is conducting its own parallel investigation.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate in connection with a fatal collision involving a vehicle and a cyclist in King. On Friday, July 24, 2020, at 7:10 a.m., an officer was conducting speed enforcement on Keele Street in the area of Cavell Avenue.

The officer came across a vehicle that had rolled over. A man was found deceased near the vehicle. Officers searching the area came across a bicycle that they believe belongs to the man who is deceased.

At approximately 9 a.m., while searching the area, officers located a man believed to be the driver of the vehicle who was walking in the area of 15th Sideroad. He was arrested and the investigation is ongoing.

The SIU was contacted and invoked their mandate. The SIU is now conducting an investigation into this incident. York Regional Police is conducting its own parallel investigation.

Investigators are appealing to the community for assistance to identify the cyclist who was killed.

Deceased Description:

  • Male, white
  • Medium build
  • In his 40s to 50s

Wearing: 

  • Cyclist clothing with black, grey, white and some green
  • Black shoes
  • Navy blue helmet

Bicycle Description:

  • Specialized Tarmac

The SIU is an independent oversight agency that investigates reports where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Section 12(2) of Regulation 267/10 of the Police Services Act states that members of a police force shall not, during the course of an investigation by the SIU, disclose to any person any information with respect to the incident or the investigation.
