The Special Investigations Unit has determined there is no cause to lay charges against a York Regional Police officer following the injury of woman riding a motorcycle who was caught speeding in King City.

On Sept. 19, 2018, at about 7:15 p.m., the officer was performing speed enforcement when he clocked a motorcycle travelling at a high rate of speed southbound on Weston Road, descending the hill that forms a valley at the Laskay Lane intersection, according to the SIU report.

The 51-year-old female operator of the Harley Davidson motorcycle was travelling at 82 km/h, in excess of the posted 50 km/h speed, the SIU report states.

When the officer walked onto Weston to indicate the woman should pull over, she applied her front brake, which resulted in her being thrown over the handlebars and landing on the roadway. The woman rolled a few times before coming to a stop, while the motorcycle slid past her for several metres before coming to rest.

The officer and his partner rushed to assist the woman, according to the SIU, and paramedics and firefighters attended the scene. At the hospital, the woman was diagnosed with a fractured shoulder and finger injury.

SIU Interim Director Joseph Martino has determined there are no reasonable grounds to lay criminal charges against the officer in relation to the serious injuries sustained by the woman.
