An off-duty York Regional Police officer has been charged with impaired driving after she was stopped by police in Bradford last weekend.

At about 9 p.m. on Aug. 13, South Simcoe Police received a report from a citizen about a potential impaired driver heading north on Yonge Street. As a result of that call, 43-year-old Amanda Knegje has been charged with operation while impaired and operation while impaired - excess blood alcohol.

Knegje, a Newmarket resident, has been with York Regional Police since 2020 and is a member of uniform patrol. She has been suspended without pay following these charges.

“This is very troubling considering the work that York Regional Police is doing to combat impaired driving. We continue to remind our members of their responsibility to live the values of our organization, both on and off duty,” said Chief Jim MacSween.

He said it is important for YRP to share information when an officer is charged in order to be transparent.

“York Regional Police is committed to transparency and is accountable to our community,” he said. “When a member is charged with a criminal offence, that information is released to our community as a part of that commitment.”

Knegje, who is from Newmarket, is one of four people to be charged with impaired driving by South Simcoe Police this past weekend, the police service said.
