A 24-year-old man from the Town of Newmarket has been sentenced to six years in prison after pleading guilty to several impaired-related criminal driving offences in connection with the death of a five-year-old girl after a collision in the Township of King in 2018.

On Sept. 17, 2019, Kamau Davis-Locke pleaded guilty to impaired driving cause death and impaired driving cause bodily harm x2.

On Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2020, in the Ontario Court of Justice in Newmarket, Justice Tetley sentenced Mr. Davis-Locke to six years in prison and a 10-year driving prohibition.

On Saturday, Aug. 4, 2018, at approximately 7:15 a.m., York Regional Police responded to the area of Davis Drive west of Keele Street for a serious, multi-vehicle collision with nine people involved. Upon arrival, officers determined that a silver Volvo with two occupants collided with a grey Ford Taurus with one occupant and then struck a grey Chevrolet Cobalt with one occupant before colliding head-on with a black Honda Civic with five occupants.

The driver of the Honda Civic, a 32 year-old man from Scarborough, was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries. The passenger, a 30-year-old woman from Scarborough, was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Their three children were also in the vehicle. An 11-year-old boy and a three-year-old boy were transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and a five-year-old girl was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries. On Aug. 9, 2018, the five-year-old girl sadly succumbed to her injuries in hospital.

Investigators with the York Regional Police Major Collision Investigation Unit determined that alcohol was a contributing factor to the collision. On Dec. 10, 2018, the accused was charged with a variety of impaired-related criminal offences resulting in a guilty plea to the offences noted above.
