Man wanted in assault of officer in Markham

The York Regional Police officer had arrested the suspect at a Woodbine gas station when he fled in his car

Investigators with the York Regional Police #5 District Criminal Investigations Bureau are seeking public assistance to identify a suspect following an assault on a police officer in the City of Markham.

On Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2020, shortly after 9:30 p.m., an officer was investigating a vehicle at a gas station located at 7001 Woodbine Ave., in the area of Woodbine Avenue and Steeles Avenue East. The officer noticed that the vehicle had a Las Vegas licence plate that appeared to be fake.

After speaking with the driver who appeared to be impaired, the officer placed the driver under arrest for Care and Control of a Motor Vehicle. The driver resisted arrest, got into his vehicle and drove away. The door of the vehicle struck the officer as it was fleeing, but thankfully the officer was not seriously injured.

Investigators are releasing images of the suspect and his vehicle and appealing to anyone who may be able to identify him to please come forward.

Suspect description:

  • Male, white
  • 40 to 45 years
  • 5’7”, 185 lbs.
  • Medium build
  • Grey hair

Suspect vehicle:

  • 2002 Honda Civic
  • Silver
  • Black vinyl wrap on roof
  • No front licence plate
