Man faces weapons, impaired charges after fleeing Richmond Hill collision

Investigators with the York Regional Police #2 District Criminal Investigations Bureau have charged a man with impaired and firearms-related offences after he fled the scene of a multi-vehicle collision in the City of Richmond Hill.

On Monday, Nov. 30, 2020 shortly after noon, York Regional Police were called to a three-vehicle collision in the intersection of Major Mackenzie Drive and Shirley Drive. When officers arrived, they found three vehicles involved, but only two drivers. One of the drivers, a 45-year-old woman from the Town of Collingwood, was suffering from non-life-threatening injuries. The other driver, a 40-year-old woman from the City of Vaughan, was not injured. Witnesses at the scene advised that a male driver had fled.

A short time later, officers located the suspect hiding behind a dumpster at a nearby plaza. The man ran from officers, but following a short foot pursuit, he was taken into custody. During a search of the suspect, officers located a loaded handgun. He was also showing signs of being impaired and failed a test performed by an officer who is a drug recognition expert. He has since been charged.

Charges include:
    •    Impaired operation
    •    Failure to stop after collision
    •    Possession of a prohibited firearm with ammunition
    •    Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
    •    Possession of a firearm knowing it’s possession is unauthorized
    •    Carry concealed weapon
    •    Fail to comply with release order x3
