Man charged with sexual assault after incidents in York Region

Investigators with the York Regional Police Special Victims Unit, Sexual Assault Section, have laid charges against a 20-year-old man from Innisfil in an ongoing sexual assault investigation that occurred in York Region.

Through the investigation, which began in April 2022, several females came forward to report they had been victimized by the suspect, between late May 2020 and May 2022. The victims were between the ages of 16 and 20 when the offences occurred.

On May 31, the accused was arrested. He has been charged with several offences and investigators are appealing to anyone with information or any additional victims to please come forward.

  • Sexual assault
  • Assault
  • Criminal harassment x2
  • Harassing communication x2
  • Indecent communication x2
  • Publication of an intimate image without consent x2
  • Overcome resistance by attempting to choke, suffocate or strangle another
  • Voyeurism

The accused appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice in Newmarket on June 1. He has been remanded in court and will appear again Monday, June 6.

A sexual assault includes any non-consensual contact of a sexual nature. York Regional Police would like to encourage anyone who feels they may have been a victim of a sexual assault to come forward and report the incident to police. There is no statute of limitations for sexual offences and offenders can be prosecuted well after the date of the offence.

If you are the survivor of sexual assault, you can report the incident online if:

  • You are not in danger
  • The person who assaulted you is not present
  • There is no evidence present that may be collected by police (blood, semen, saliva, etc.). Evidence can be collected for up to 12 days after the sexual assault has occurred
  • You have access to a private email address, to which the suspect does not have access
