Man arrested following attempted carjacking, purse snatching at Vaughan Mills Mall

York Regional Police have charged a man after an attempted car theft and purse theft in the City of Vaughan.

On Wednesday, July 29, 2020 shortly before 7 p.m., York Regional Police were called to the parking lot of Vaughan Mills Mall for a report of a suspicious person. When officers arrived, they found a victim who advised that she was seated in her car that was parked near the Toys R Us store when a man approached her vehicle, opened the driver’s door and demanded she get out. The victim yelled for help and the suspect fled.

A short time later, officers located a second victim who advised that she had been walking to her car when a man matching the same description came up to her from behind and grabbed her purse, knocked her to the ground and fled the area. The victim sustained injuries and was transported to hospital for treatment.

Officers searched the area and located the suspect. After a short foot pursuit he was placed under arrest in a parking lot just north of Vaughan Mills Mall. The accused was found to be in possession of a spring-loaded folding knife, as well as the stolen property.

    •    Assault cause bodily harm
    •    Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000
    •    Theft of credit card
