A 66-year-old man from York Region has died after being struck by a cement mixer on Highway 404 earlier today.

The man was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later due to his critical injuries, Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said in an online report.

The single-vehicle collision occurred in the southbound lanes of the highway, near Elgin Mills Road.

The man had exited his vehicle that was disabled or parked at the side of the highway, Schmidt said.

The two southbound lanes of Highway 404 that were closed at Stouffville Road for the police investigation were expected to be re-opened by 2 p.m.

Police are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact investigators.
