York Regional Police Chief Eric Jolliffe will be leading his brave officers and emergency services personnel offering their heads for a close shave tomorrow in support of local children with cancer.

Razors will be buzzing at the force's Be a Hero event to raise funds for the pediatric oncology unit at Southlake Regional Health Centre Saturday, April 6 at 11 a.m. at Upper Canada Mall, by Market & Co., at 17600 Yonge St. in Newmarket.

York Regional Police has raised more than $275,000 for cancer research over the past 15 years. This year, police officers will be joined by their emergency services partners from York Region Paramedic Services, Central York Fire Services, York Region Transit and Town of Aurora Bylaw and Animal Services.

Chief Eric Jolliffe will bare his head along with York Paramedics Acting Chief and General Manager Chris Spearen and Central York Fire Chief Ian Laing. They will be joined by Southlake's head of pediatrics, Dr. Charmaine van Shaik, and this year’s child ambassador and cancer survivor, Lily Meagher, whose father York paramedic Matt Meagher will also be shaving his head.

Through a partnership with SickKids and the Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario (POGO), Southlake’s clinic provides as much treatment as possible to local children here, close to home, to reduce the stress and burden of travelling downtown or living separately while a child receives care at SickKids.
