Hate-motivated messages written in snow in Mount Albert

Investigators with the York Regional Police #1 District Criminal Investigations Bureau are appealing for witnesses after hate-motivated words were found in the snow on vehicles in the Town of East Gwillimbury.

On Sunday, Dec. 13, 2020, at 10 a.m., York Regional Police were called to Princess Street, which is in the area of Highway 48 and Mount Albert Road, for a report of anti-Black words written in the snow on parked vehicles. When officers arrived, much of the snow had been removed, but they did find one vehicle that was parked on Princess Street with an offensive word written in the snow.

Investigators are asking any witnesses, anyone with information or anyone with video surveillance footage in that area, to please come forward.

This investigation will be overseen by specially trained hate crime investigators. York Regional Police does not tolerate hate crime in any form. Those who victimize individuals based on race, national or ethnic origin, language, colour, religion, age, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or mental or physical disability will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
