A Georgina man has been charged with human trafficking after a victim from Mexico came forward to police.

The investigation began in April after the victim filed a report with York Regional Police. He told police he made arrangements for employment in Canada. He arrived at a residence on Bayview Avenue in Georgina to work caring for animals, but police said the conditions were poor and not consistent with what he agreed to.

After investigating, Israel Yahsif Mane Monter, 44, of Georgina was arrested. He is charged with trafficking in persons, forgery, possession of a prohibited device and cruelty to animals after Provincial Animal Welfare Services were called in to investigate the well-being of the animals, police said.

Investigators said they believe there could be more victims who have been brought to Canada from Mexico under false pretenses. They are encouraged to come forward. Police said victims who are worried about their immigration status have a right to support and protection under Canadian law.

Situations in which a person comes to Canada with the promise of a well-paying job but find unsafe or poor working conditions and little pay, or they experience threats or violence are considered labour trafficking, police said.

There is a 24/7 hotline available to connect human trafficking victims and survivors with support.  The number is 1-833-900-1010. Anyone with information or who thinks they are victim is also asked to call York Regional Police human trafficking section at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 6800, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS, or leave an anonymous tip online at www.1800222tips.com.
