Additional charges have been laid against Markham resident Steven Wolfer in an ongoing historic sexual assault investigation by York Regional Police.

The 58-year-old man is facing two new charges of sexual assault and two charges of gross indecency following incidents that took place in 1983, when the victim was 14 years old.

York Regional Police said the victim came forward in June, saying he was sexually assaulted by an adult on multiple occasions.

He knew the suspect from a church and school he attended in the area of Yonge Street and King Road in Richmond Hill.

YRP said Wolfer volunteered at the church and was a coach for the school’s sports teams.

This is the second time the Markham man has been charged as a result of this ongoing investigation, which began in April 2021.

At that time a victim came forward to tell police he had been sexually assaulted at two separate times by an adult in 1989, when the victim was 12 years old.

As a result, in June Wolfer was charged with one count of sexual assault and one count of sexual interference of a child under 14.

He is scheduled to appear in court in Newmarket on Aug. 31, 2021.

YRP are urging any victims or people with information to come forward.

Police say the accused was a mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters of York Region in 1989 and volunteered with the Boy Scouts in the mid-80s.

He was also a supply elementary school teacher in York Region with the York Region Catholic School board from 2000 to 2004.

Police are also reminding people that there is no statute of limitations for sexual offences, so suspects can be prosecuted well after the date of the offence.

Anyone who thinks they may have been a victim of a sexual assault is encouraged to report the incident to police.
