5 charged in Markville Mall jewelry store robbery (4 photos)

Four additional suspects continue to be sought by York Regional Police in the robbery last December

Investigators with the York Regional Police Hold-Up Unit have made additional arrests and laid charges in connection with a 2018 robbery at a jewelry store in the City of Markham.

On Dec. 30, 2018 at approximately 6:25 p.m., officers responded to a jewelry store inside the Markville Mall on Highway 7 East in the City of Markham for reports of a robbery. Through the investigation, officers learned that the six suspects arrived in two vehicles and entered the jewelry store wearing construction vests and equipped with firearms and hammers. [It is alleged that] the suspects smashed the glass cases in the store and stole a quantity of jewelry.

The suspects fled the scene but officers observed one of the suspects and engaged in a foot pursuit. The suspect [allegedly] assaulted the officer attempting to get away, but the officer suffered only minor injuries and was able to take the suspect into custody. Tristan Currie, 27 of Toronto was charged with robbery, disguise with intent and assault with intent to resist arrest.

Through the investigation, officers learned that the suspects were [allegedly] responsible for an additional incident where a suspicious package was left at the Markham GO train station on Main Street Markham North, just prior to the robbery. The incident was believed to be an attempt to distract police resources away from the robbery. Emergency Response Unit officers quickly responded to this incident and ensured there was no risk to public safety.

Following a lengthy investigation, investigators executed several search warrants and charged five additional people in connection with the incident. Four suspects are still wanted in connection with the incident.

    •    Jessica Moore, 25

Charged:
    •    Nathaniel Nelson, 26, of Toronto
    •    Malcolm Murphy, 20, of Toronto
    •    Oneill Coombs Taylor, 26, of Ajax
    •    Vanessa Attree, 19, of Toronto
    •    Sarah Vanderspek, 23, of no fixed address

Charges include:
    •    robbery
    •    conspiracy to commit an indictable offence
    •    possession of a restricted firearm with ammunition
    •    unauthorized possession of a firearm
    •    firearm in motor vehicle
    •    firearm possession contrary to prohibition order
    •    breach of firearm prohibition order
    •    public mischief
