Cyclist charged with assault following Vaughan parking lot incident

According to police, a man spit on a female driver in the Thornhill plaza last May

Investigators with the York Regional Police #4 District Criminal Investigations Bureau have charged a 22-year-old man following an assault that occurred in a parking lot in the City of Vaughan.

On Friday, May 17, 2019, at 6:22 p.m., police were called to a plaza located at Centre Street and New Westminster Drive for a report of an assault. The investigation revealed that a female driver was driving through the parking lot behind the plaza when a male on a bicycle began riding toward her. She honked her horn to alert the cyclist. He stopped his bicycle in front of her vehicle and walked to the passenger side where he [allegedly] spat at the female driver hitting her in the face. The suspect then [allegedly] struck the passenger mirror of the vehicle causing it to break off. The suspect rode away westbound on Centre Street.

Investigators released images of the suspect and as a result of tips received from our community, he was identified. On Sunday, July 21, 2019, investigators executed a search warrant at the suspect’s residence in Vaughan where he was placed under arrest.

Mr. Atis is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Newmarket on Aug. 28, 2019.
