Two teens were taken into custody after South Simcoe Police Service officers received a call regarding a weapon.

On Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2020, around 12 p.m., police responded to a report of two males with some type of gun under a bridge in the West Park and Miller Park Avenue area of Bradford. Officers arrived, contained the area and two nearby schools were placed in hold and secure. The males were arrested without incident and police seized a replica handgun.

As a result of investigation, an 18-year-old Bradford man was charged with possession of weapon for dangerous purpose. A 17-year-old Bradford youth was referred to a diversion program.

South Simcoe Police Service wants to warn the public that possessing fake guns can result in real criminal charges. Imitations include airsoft, BB or pellet guns, prop guns, paintball guns, and even toy or novelty guns. Replica firearms can be indistinguishable from real guns. Officers will treat replica firearm calls as real until they can prove the weapon is not a threat.
