Be wary of latest scam call involving 'federal charges'

'This is obviously a scam in the same realm as the Canada Revenue Agency scam where they later request a payment to remove the charges from your record,' OPP say

The OPP are warning of a new telephone fraud that says you are facing "federal charges".

Several Collingwood area residents reported receiving calls in which an automated voice advises: "Canadian Majesty calling, federal charges have been levied against your SIN number. Do not proceed to a federal building or you will be arrested. Press 1 to speak to a justice of the peace."

When a complainant followed the instruction, a person answered, "Service Canada", according an OPP new release.

"This is obviously a scam in the same realm as the Canada Revenue Agency scam where they later request a payment to remove the charges from your record," the OPP said.

Police advise if you receive such a call, do not press the number and do not provide the caller with any personal information or send payment. Instead, hang up the phone and call your local police or contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or online at the Fraud Reporting System (FRS) to report the incident.
