Arrest made after string of York Region residential break-ins

The break-ins began in late-October and saw high-end jewelry, clothing, and sports memorabilia among the items taken

Investigators with the York Regional Police #2 District Criminal Investigations Bureau – Property Crime Unit have charged a 48-year-old man in connection with several break and enters that occurred in the Cities of Vaughan and Richmond Hill.

From Oct. 31, 2022 to Dec. 2, 2022, police responded to a number of residential break and enters where high-end jewelry, clothing, accessories and sports memorabilia were stolen. Investigators believe the incidents were linked to the same suspect.

Through investigation, officers were able to identify a suspect and on Dec. 2, 2022, he was arrested and charged. A search warrant was executed at his Vaughan residence and a number of stolen items were recovered.

The investigation is ongoing and officers are seeking additional victims who have not yet come forward who may be able to identify some of the recovered property. Photographs of the recovered items can be found here.

Charged:

  • Yassir Kassam, 48, of Vaughan

Charges include:

  • break and enter commit (x2)
  • break and enter with intent (x3)
  • possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
  • possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 for the purpose of trafficking

York Regional Police encourages residents to take proactive steps to help keep their homes safe. Break and enters are often crimes of opportunity, so the less appealing and the more difficult you make it for thieves to break in, the more likely they are to move along.
