Additional charges laid in sexual assault case

Investigators with the York Regional Police Special Victims Unit – Sexual Assault Section have laid charges against a 22-year-old man in connection with a sexual assault investigation in the Town of Aurora.

In the early morning hours on Wednesday, July 3, 2019, investigators arrested Emilio Gonzalez Ramirez from the Town of Newmarket in connection with the ongoing sexual assault investigation.

This arrest came as a result from tips from the community and investigators would like to thank the media and the public for their ongoing support and assistance in this investigation.

He is now facing several charges in connection with the incident.

Charged:

  • Emilio Gonzalez Ramirez, 22, of the Town of Newmarket

Charges:

  • Aggravated sexual assault
  • Assault with a weapon
  • Pointing a firearm
  • Possession of a weapon
  • Sexual interference person under 16

The accused will be appearing again before the Ontario Court of Justice in Newmarket on July 4, 2019.

Officers also arrested and charged Santiago Gonzalez Ramirez, 32, of Newmarket, with accessory after the fact. Anyone who aids or assists a suspect in escaping or evading police may be subject to a criminal charge of accessory after the fact.

This investigation is ongoing and investigators are still looking to speak with anyone with information including the potential witness who was jogging on the trails and the young woman with blond hair who was approached by the suspect after getting off of York Transit bus #1088 on the date of the incident.

On Monday, June 24, 2019, at 11:50 a.m., York Regional Police were called to John West Way north of Wellington Street for a report that a teenage girl was injured and had been sexually assaulted. Investigators have determined that the female victim was walking in the trails west of John West Way when she was approached by an unknown man, assaulted and sexually assaulted by a suspect who was armed with a handgun. The victim was taken to hospital and treated for her injuries.
