36-year-old facing vehicle theft charge

York Regional Police have charged a 36-year-old man with several offences after a vehicle was stolen in the Town of Newmarket.

On Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2020, just after midnight, officers responded to a residence on Davis Drive for a report of a theft of vehicle. The caller reported that his dark blue Dodge Charger had just been stolen out of the driveway.

Shortly after, the vehicle was observed in the area of Yonge Street and Elgin Mills in Richmond Hill, driving at a high rate of speed. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle and boxed it in. The driver ran from the car but left it in gear causing it to collide with a police vehicle. The driver was caught and was arrested. He showed signs of being impaired but refused to provide a breath sample.

Charged: 

  • Roderick Springgay, 36, of no fixed address

Charges:

  • Theft of vehicle over $5,000
  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000
  • Dangerous operation
  • Failure or refusal to comply with demand

The accused has been held in custody and is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Newmarket on Friday, Aug. 7, 2020.
