2 traffic stops in Vaughan result in firearms, drug charges

York Regional Police have charged two men with multiple charges, including firearms offences, after two separate traffic stops in Vaughan.

On Saturday, Sept. 19, 2020, at approximately 1:50 a.m., officers were conducting RIDE spot checks in the area of Highway 400 and Steeles Avenue. Officers stopped a vehicle and noticed a strong odour of cannabis, as well as other evidence, to suggest the driver had been smoking in the car or had cannabis accessible while driving. Officers searched the vehicle and located a loaded handgun. The driver is now facing numerous charges.

CHARGED: 

  • Brandon Kywewmeh, 27, of the City of Toronto

CHARGES INCLUDE:  

  • Possession of a Firearm Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized
  • Possession of a Loaded Prohibited or Restricted Firearm  
  • Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Firearm with Ammunition  
  • Possession of a Firearm Knowing Serial Number has Been Tampered with 
  • Possession of a Weapon
  • Transports Firearm, Weapon Prohibited Device or Ammunition in a Careless Manner  
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm in a Motor Vehicle  
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Prohibited Device or Ammunition  
  • Drive Vehicle with Cannabis Readily Available  
  • Fail to Comply with Undertaking

On Friday, Sept. 18, 2020, just before 1 a.m., an officer observed a vehicle swerving on the road in the area of Steeles Avenue and Jane Street. The officer stopped the vehicle and spoke to the driver. The driver failed a breathalyzer and was placed under arrest for 80 plus. The driver resisted arrest and fought with officers and was attempting to reach for his waistband area.

A concerned citizen observing the interaction pulled over to assist the officer until other officers arrived. The driver was searched along with the vehicle and officers located a substance believe to be cocaine and a loaded handgun.

  • Careless Use of a Firearm, Weapon, Prohibited Device or Ammunition  
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm in a Motor Vehicle  
  • Unauthorized Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Weapon  
  • Possession of Cocaine  
  • Assault with Intent to Resist Arrest
