York Regional Police continues to prioritize road safety with proactive enforcement efforts. This past weekend, 10 vehicles were taken off our roads and more than 130 charges were laid for unsafe vehicle modifications.

On Saturday, April 23, 2022, officers with the Road Safety Bureau attended an organized car meet at the Markham Fairgrounds. More than 130 charges were laid under the Highway Traffic Act related to illegal vehicle modifications, and 10 vehicles were taken off the road for safety reasons. Charges laid included: Unsafe vehicle, improper tires, improper muffler, absence of catalytic converter (environmental hazard), heavy window tinting, improper lights, no horn and no brakes.

Road safety remains one of the highest priorities for York Regional Police. Anyone operating a vehicle on our roadways is required to ensure that the vehicle is safe and will not cause a risk to anyone else on the road. Drivers must be mindful that auto shops or product manufactures will sell products or have vehicle modification options available to purchase that are not legal to have on our roads in Ontario. Please refer to the Highway Traffic Act or the Ministry of Transportation for more information on illegal vehicle modifications.

Citizens are encouraged to report unsafe vehicles, either by calling 9-1-1 if the incident appears to be a potential life-threatening emergency, or by calling the non-emergency line for vehicle gatherings that appear to be preparing to race, or by reporting the incident through our Road Watch program at https://onlinereporting.yrp.ca/RoadWatch.html.
