It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Henry James Smith, on May 4, 2022 in his 96th year at Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket, Ontario.

“Jim” as he was best known to most, was born in Swift Current, Newfoundland to the late Minnie Smith (nee Crocker) and Samuel Smith. He is predeceased by his beloved wife Elizabeth (Beth) Smith (nee Kinkaid), as well as his sisters Rebecca, and Effie, and his brother Clarence.

Father of Elizabeth (Louisa) (James) and beloved grandfather to Steven (Kaelcey), Rebecka (Andrew), Amanda (Mark), and proud great-grandfather to his legacy Thomas James Neville. Lifelong and best friend to the late Peter Rust (Isabelle, Carol, Katelyn), and Keisha Davis (Nikki, Keno, Koia).

“Jim” was an avid gardener, dog lover, frequent cruiser with Royal Caribbean, Newfie music lover, and a pillar of his community on Longford Drive for over 60 years. He worked at Cadillac Lumber for over 30 years until his retirement, and was a proud Newfoundlander.

“Jim” will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him for his in contagious laughter, witty sense of humour, kind and genuine heart, and his generosity for all. “Jim” being the humble and compassionate person he has always been, lived life for the fullest and would not want to be mourned, but instead, encourage all to cherish your loved ones and be kind to others.

We would like to thank Dr. Kristin Danielle James and the entire Palliative Unit Staff for their compassionate care for Henry “Jim” Smith during his difficult remaining months, as they went over and beyond the call of duty to ensure that his comfort and dignity was always met. We would also like to thank the staff at Alexander Muir, retirement residence for their love and care.

In lieu of flowers, please donate on behalf of Henry “Jim” Smith to Southlake’s Palliative Care Unit or the OSPCA.

Visitation will be held at Roadhouse & Rose Funeral Home, 157 Main Street South, Newmarket on Sunday, May 15, 2022 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Monday, May 16, 2022 at 11 a.m. A reception will follow the service in the upstairs lounge.
