“Always Look on the Bright Side of Life”. It is with great sadness and wonderful memories that we announce the peaceful passing of Donald (Donnie) Bruce Slessor at Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Orillia on Thursday, August 18, 2022 in his 68th year. Best friend and hilarious husband of Jane (nee Spek) for 20 years. Dear son of the late Lillian Slessor (nee Moon) and Dwight Slessor. Predeceased by his loving sister Carole Burdett (Bill). Spirited brother to Peter (Jane), John (Barb), Ted and Bonnie. Loving nephew to Norma Hicks (nee Moon). Don left a legacy of memories for and was extremely proud of his three children, Lillian Rose (Adam), Jeremy Daniel (Allison), Angela Lynn (Jake) and adored his four granddaughters, Lila, Jacie, Maggie and Willa. “Favourite son-in-law” to Janet Bannon and fun-loving brother-in-law to Brian (Tammy) Spek. “Uncle Don” to many, he also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews and so many great friends. He will also be dearly missed by his favourite labradoodle, Bobbi. Don was an alumni of St. Andrew’s College in Aurora and went on to play semi-professional soccer in Texas.

For many years, Don was a proud family member of Slessor Motors, Newmarket, working in various capacities. After some time he established Brothers Appliances in Newmarket. Years later he received his Behavioural Health and Addictions degree from George Brown College in Toronto. Well known and respected in the Newmarket community, he always had a smile on his face sharing his positive outlook on life with everyone he met. Don was an avid golfer, loved sports and thoroughbred horse racing (Moon Bay Stables, est. 2002). His contributions to the field of addictions were enormous and he will be greatly missed by the AA community. Heartfelt appreciation and thanks to the wonderful, caring ICU and palliative care staff at Soldiers Memorial Hospital in Orillia. A special thank you to Mary Copp, chaplain.

The family would also like to thank everyone for the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time. Loving gratitude to D.J. Slessor, Jeffrey Kane and Michael Calderone. A big part of Don’s joie de vivre was to “create the event and make it happen!”. In honour of this, there will be a Celebration of Life at Roadhouse and Rose Funeral Home at a later date. If desired, memorial donations may be made to Bellwood Health Services or Soldiers Memorial Hospital.

“This is the first day of the rest of your life”. Rest in peace, our dear friend.
