Newmarket regional councillor and deputy mayor candidate Joan Stonehocker

Name: Joan Stonehocker

Position for which you are running:  Regional Councillor

Do you reside in the ward in which you are running (council candidates):  Yes, I live in Newmarket

Outline your background/experience (100-word limit):

In my role as Executive Director of York Region Food Network, a charitable organization that delivers healthy food programs and education, I have extensive experience operating within a limited budget, ensuring that resources are allocated wisely, and working towards a strategic vision. As an active member of the community, I have demonstrated cooperation and collaboration as Chair of the Newmarket Public Library Board and founder of Cycle Newmarket. Early in my career, I spent a decade in business analysis at Esso Chemical and I have an MBA from the University of Toronto.

What are the top four qualities required to be an effective municipal representative? (4-word limit):

  1. Inclusive
  2. Collaborative
  3. Strategic
  4. Ethical

What are the two most important issues for your ward/constituents? (200-word limit):

People are looking for a fresh approach that respects the needs of everyone.

Many constituents have brought up the issue of affordable housing. As a municipality we need to connect with our provincial and federal counterparts to develop policies, programs, and zoning that encourage the development of affordable housing.  This includes encouraging rental builds, non-profit housing, supporting co-op options, and creative infill density to ensure we have housing options for everyone, particularly seniors, young people and people living on low-income.

Newmarket citizens have talked to me about challenges on our streets: speeding, bicycles on sidewalks, and unreliable transit. Solutions include connected cycling infrastructure, roads designed to protect vulnerable users, and regular well-planned transit. We need to build for future transportation and reduce reliance on cars because it is good for the environment and good for our health. We need to be creative about getting people to Riverwalk Commons for our many community events by looking at increased transit and shuttles.

What will you do to ensure you are accountable to your constituents? (50-word limit):

I am committed to open communication and dialogue with constituents. Listening, conversation and sharing information are vital to creating a shared vision for prosperity and inclusivity.

What is the most important issue for council/school board to address in the next term? (100-word limit):

We need to ensure that we are building a prosperous community where everyone is included. Too many people are being left behind. When we ensure that our most vulnerable citizens have the opportunity to participate fully, we are all better off. This includes addressing housing affordability, transportation networks, community spaces and environmental leadership.

Newmarket should be nimble in responding to opportunities. Currently, we do not have all of the answers about rules for retail cannabis stores from the province. As long as the Town can manage the numbers and locations, I am in favour of exploring retail options in Newmarket.

Describe your dream project that would result in a better quality of life in Newmarket. (100-word limit):

My dream project would be to ensure that Newmarket is an environmental leader.  For example, we should showcase best environmental practices in Town facilities, and reduce garbage by eliminating single use plastics. As well, cycling infrastructure supports the environment and creates an urban vibe that attracts forward thinking businesses and people.
