Lions gear up for playoff drive by acquiring running back Sutton from Alouettes

VANCOUVER — The B.C. Lions have augmented their attack for a playoff push by acquiring running back Tyrell Sutton from Montreal.

The Lions also acquired the Alouettes' third-round pick in the 2019 CFL draft, with B.C.'s second-round pick and a conditional sixth round pick in 2019 going the other way.

The five-foot-eight, 213-pound Sutton played six seasons in Montreal, amassing 3,573 yards on 649 carries in 69 games. The 31-year-old running back gained 417 yards and scored one touchdown on 86 rushes in nine games this season.

The Lions hope to make a drive for the post-season over their final six games of the 2018 campaign. B.C. (6-6) has won three straight and sits two points back of Edmonton for third place in the Western Conference with a game in hand on the Eskimos. Winnipeg is tied with B.C. with 12 points, but has played one more game than the Lions.

It's likely the Lions would get into the post-season with a top-four finish in the West. The top three teams in each division make the playoffs, unless the fourth-place team in a division has a better record that the third-place team in the other. Toronto is currently holding down third in the East at 3-9, with Montreal fourth at 3-10.

"We are entering a very critical period in our schedule and we will continue to do everything we can to improve our team," Lions general manager Ed Hervey said in a release. "Tyrell is a physical running back who is equally effective in pass protection and we look forward to having him join us for the stretch run."
