With bake sales, raffles and community donations — and wearing their statement pink jerseys at their games — the York Simcoe Express minor midget players have raised $5,000 for breast cancer research.
Throughout October, with the help of their families, they raised funds and awareness during their Pink in the Rink campaign, and presented Dianne Harrison, an Aurora breast cancer champion and survivor, with the cheque for the Canadian Cancer Society on Nov. 2.
The team acknowledges Silent Impact Designs and McLean and Dickey Marine Insurance for their sponsorship of the pink jerseys, which allowed all of the funds raised to go toward the campaign, Winsor said.
"It has been a collaborative effort between our team, association and all of our families. And we thank everyone for your commitment to this important initiative," he added. "We would also like to give a shout out to the York Simcoe Express peewee team and Markham Waxers minor midget team who contributed team donations to our campaign."
The YSE AAA minor ice hockey organization represents players from Newmarket, Aurora, Bradford, East Gwillimbury, Georgina and Schomberg.
