Saints chalk up victory against Mimico in 3rd-period surge

The Saints play host to their division rivals, the West Durham Ironheads, Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Ray Twinney Recreation Centre

You can follow the Newmarket Saints Jr B lacrosse team throughout the 2019 season in their series of regular reports contributed by Saints' staff.

You certainly can’t call the Newmarket Saints boring. The team picked up their second win of the season Tuesday night, storming back in the third period to beat the Mimico Mountaineers 8-7.

The Saints trailed by four goals early into the final frame before staging the comeback that saw the team reel off six goals in just over 10 minutes.

“We seemed to be heading down the wrong path through two periods” said Saints Head Coach Dan Ransom Sr., referencing some sloppy play and penalty trouble. “Credit to our group. They took ownership, played a strong third and were rewarded with two points”

The victory pushes Newmarket’s record up to 2-4 this season. The Saints struggled last week, losing three straight, including both games of a weekend trip out east to the Ottawa-area. Ransom hopes Tuesday’s win can reignite the optimism the team felt earlier this season.

“We needed that one badly” said Ransom Sr. “We let one get away from us Sunday and you could see the boys pressing a bit; through six games, I like where our group is at.”

The Saints stay busy this week, with three more games on the schedule. Thursday, they play host to their division rivals, the West Durham Ironheads. First face-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Ray Twinney Recreation Centre.

On Saturday, they’ll travel to Brampton to play the Excelsiors. Then on Sunday, the Saints will host the Clarington Green Gaels in a Mother’s Day matinee starting at 2 p.m.
