Newmarket takes battle for OJHL North Division title to final game

The series is tied, with the Game 7 showdown tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. at Markham's Centennial Community Centre

The Newmarket Hurricanes are headed to Markham tomorrow for the final North Division playoff showdown with the Markham Royals, after failing to take the series on home turf yesterday.

Sheldon Nolan, assisted by Adrian Naburs, scored the sole goal for the Hurricanes in a third-period power play, with the Royals winning game 6 by a score of 3-1.

The first two periods' action was spent mostly in Hurricanes territory, with the Royals outshooting the Canes 2 to 1 in the first period. The Royals' Nick Giunta, assisted by Braedyn Aubin and Alessio Luciani, scored in the first period, and  Zac Sirota, assisted by Eric Mergelas and Christos Rodis, scored the Royals second goal in the second period.

In the third period, the Canes picked up the pace, storming the Royals' net with 18 shots to the Royals' four. With seven minutes left in the game, defender Nolan scored the Cane's first and only goal on the power play. With the Canes' goaltender on the bench for their end-of-game rally, Markham's Braedyn Aubin scored an unassisted goal on the empty net to clinch the Royals' 3-1 victory.

Game 7 for the North Division playoff title is Tuesday, March 27 at 7:30 p.m. at Centennial Community Centre at 8600 McCowan Rd., Unionville.
