YRP lead new task force after another carjacking incident

The victim was assaulted and had his watch, wallet and cell phone stolen as well

York Regional Police will lead a new Greater Toronto Area carjacking task force after investigators with the York Regional Police Hold-Up Unit arrested two suspects following a carjacking in the City of Richmond Hill.

On Wednesday, May 25, 2022, around 10 p.m., York Regional Police were called to a plaza on Leslie Street and Green Hill for a report of a carjacking. The victim was sitting in his Mercedes in the parking lot when he was approached by two male suspects armed with handguns. The victim was assaulted and the suspects stole his watch, wallet and cell phone, then fled in the victim’s vehicle.

Air2 was able to follow the suspects and investigators located them at an address in Toronto, along with the stolen vehicle. The suspects were taken into custody and officers recovered the vehicle. Follow this link to the Air2 video https://youtu.be/GN3aEsrZVOo

CHARGED:

  • A 19-year-old man from Oshawa
  • A 19-year-old man of fixed address

CHARGES:

  • Robbery with a Firearm
  • Disguise with Intent
  • Possession of a Loaded Prohibited or Restricted Firearm

As a result of the increase in carjacking incidents, York Regional Police will lead a new GTA-wide task force that also includes members of the Toronto Police Service, Peel Regional Police, the Ontario Provincial Police, the Durham Regional Police Service and the Criminal Intelligence Service of Ontario This task force will further co-ordinate law enforcement efforts across the GTA to combat this issue.
