Newmarket's Catholic high school scores regional arts program

Shared 513 times | Nov. 6, 2018

This is exciting news for Catholic students in northern York Region — a regional arts program is coming to Newmarket's Sacred Heart Catholic High School in 2020.

The York Region Catholic board currently offers an arts program at St. Elizabeth Catholic High School in Thornhill, while the York Region District School Board offers four regional arts programs, including one at Newmarket's Huron Heights Secondary School.

Local Trustee Theresa McNicol, a key advocate of the initiative, said developing a regional arts program for northern York Catholic students is a way to attract new students who “definitely shop around for the best high school” to attend, as the board has been struggling with declining enrolment.

“The programming is so open-ended right now,” McNicol said. “From there, we can seek out partnerships with Newmarket Theatre and Old Town Hall, and many others.”

“We want to take the strong arts component that’s already at Sacred Heart and push it to the next level,” McNicol said. “It’s going to be a very exciting time in Newmarket.”
