If you think homelessness is unacceptable, you're encouraged to join an upcoming community roundtable for Newmarket and Aurora that will find participants discussing ideas to help individuals and families find stable and permanent housing.

The Tuesday, Sept. 17 event runs from 2 to 4 p.m. at Trinity United Church, 461 Park Ave., and features a lineup of speakers that include Newmarket homeless shelter Inn from the Cold’s executive director Ann Watson, York Region’s manager of homlessness programs, Nancy Lennox, and a client who is the recipient of local food security and shelter services.

In addition, the day’s activities will recognize the many volunteers from the area’s places of worship who organize and serve community meals.

Newmarket Mayor John Taylor will also be in attendance and will deliver closing remarks.

Retired Trinity United Church Newmarket Rev. Ross Carson said the community roundtable was inspired, in part, by noted U.S. public health expert Dr. Mitchell Katz, now president and CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals.

Dr. Katz, a longtime advocate of a housing-first strategy as a key determinant of health and, as a keynote speaker on the North American conference circuit and homelessness crusader, has said that “civic leaders, businesspeople, health professionals and humanitarian-minded individuals will need to say together, ‘Homelessness is unacceptable’.”

If that thought resonates with you, register to participate in the Community Roundtable on Homelessness by emailing Rev. Ross Carson at [email protected] by Thursday, Sept. 12.
