During Emergency Preparedness Week across Canada, the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority wants to remind residents of the dangers associated with flooding.
Are you prepared for a flooding emergency? According to a study, Canadian Voices on Changing Flood Risk, published in April 2017, 94 per cent of people living in flood risk zones didn’t know they were at risk. Do you know if you’re at risk of flooding? You can find out by going to LSRCA.on.ca/maps.
Here are some tips to prepare and protect yourself in the event of an emergency such as a flood:
- Make sure you have a 72-hour emergency kit on hand as well as an up-to-date emergency plan.
- Know your insurance policy. Don’t wait until afterwards to find out you’re not covered. Add it to your to-do list today - so you know what emergencies you’re covered for.
- Protect your property with easy flood-readiness fixes.
- If flooding happens, tune into the local radio for updates or stay in touch with your municipality or emergency services (such as fire or police).
The role of conservation authorities in flooding emergencies is prevention and prediction. Every day, 365 days a year, staff in our Engineering Department starts their day by checking statistics, comparing forecasts, running scenarios and then issuing flood statements if warranted. We share these statements with school boards, emergency personnel at municipalities, neighbouring conservation authorities, the media as well as post on our website and social media channels.
