The Regional Municipality of York has been named one of Canada’s Top Employers for Young People for 2020 by Mediacorp Canada Inc., the country’s largest publisher of employment-related periodicals.

“On behalf of York Regional Council, I am very pleased we have been recognized as one of Canada’s best organizations for young employees,” said York Region Chairman and CEO Wayne Emmerson. “The award is illustrative of our commitment to grow and develop talented individuals who support the needs of our rapidly growing and changing communities.”

Canada’s Top Employers for Young People, administered through Canada’s Top 100 Employers project, was first published in 2002 and recognizes organizations offering the nation’s best workplaces and programs for young people just starting their careers.

Winning organizations are evaluated based on the programs they have to attract and retain younger workers, including tuition assistance, co-op work-study programs, mentorship and training opportunities and career-management programs.

Several reasons York Region was selected include:

  • Year-round co-op placements and internships for students to gain practical experience in the workplace
  • Innovative programs for graduates, such as the finance department’s Triple A Program
  • Participation as one of CivicAction’s HireNext Employers, ensuring youth-inclusive hiring practices remain a priority
  • Ongoing commitment to creating entry-level positions.

York Region’s recognition as a Top Employer for Young People follows Mediacorp Canada’s recent announcement of York Region as one of Greater Toronto’s Top Employers for 2020.

“York Region is honoured to be named as an employer of choice,” said Bruce Macgregor, York Region’s Chief Administrative Officer. “We continue to be recognized for our progressive and dynamic corporate culture, diverse and inclusive workplace and health and wellness offerings for employees.”

In 2019, York Region hired approximately 70 graduates into full-time, part-time and casual positions. As of December 2019, more than 1,000 people under the age of 35 are employed, representative of nearly one-quarter of the entire staff complement.
