On Sunday, April 7, 2019, York Regional Police, in partnership with the community, will host its 17th annual community commemoration of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

The event theme this year is 'Building Social Cohesion and Inclusive Communities.' The event will take place at the Markham Event Centre, located at 95 Duffield Drive, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free and all are welcome.

This year’s event will be hosted by Pastor Dr. Mansfield Edwards, President of Planet Africa. The event will also feature community booths, diverse musical and artistic performances and guest speakers. This event provides an opportunity for our community partners to join with us in a celebration of our diversity and to collectively reaffirm our commitment to the eradication of prejudice and all forms of discrimination.

A few of the artistic performances are expected from the Biindigen Healing and Arts Sacred Spirit Dancers, Northern Legs Southern Fists, the Irish Dance Studio, Nirkoda Israeli Dancers of Toronto, reggae singer Jay Douglas and Niro Dance Creations.

In 1966, the United Nations declared March 21 as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The declaration was intended to increase awareness around the issues of racism and discrimination. Canada became one of the first countries to formally recognize the declaration when it proclaimed the day in 1989.

“York Regional Police is very proud to host this special cultural event for the 17th year in a row,” said Chief Eric Jolliffe.  “We are once again looking forward to celebrating this great day and connecting with members of our community.”
