An international women’s Arctic ski team and a professional women’s softball player.

A mixed-media artist and a lifelong Indigenous angler.

A 12-year-old separated from her mother at the U.S. border and a 93-year-old visual storyteller and accomplished printmaker.

A brave young neuroscientist and her colleagues.

These are the women whose stories you will discover at this year’s virtual Lunafest, an online film festival, co-hosted by the Charitable Trust of CFUW A/N and Soroptimist York Region . These two organizations have banded together with the common cause of celebrating the achievements of women.

The seven Lunafest short films are stories told by talented women directors from all over the world. This year marks the 20th anniversary of Lunafest, and the first year the event is being held virtually.

Viewers will have the best seat in the house as they enjoy the films from the comfort of their couches.

“The films in this “Rated Equal” collection celebrate the talents and achievements of forward-thinking women. Viewers will enjoy these stories of perseverance, grit, and determination. These are traits we work to foster in the women we support,” said Valerie Hume, Fundraising Chair for The Charitable Trust of CFUW Aurora/Newmarket.

Starting March 12, at 7 p.m., Lunafest films can be streamed any time during a 48-hour viewing window. Tickets are $20 and are available now at https://www.lunafest.org/screenings/virtual-screening-si-york-region-cfuw-031221 .

The event is open to all, but please note some of the films contain some mature subject matter and are recommended for audiences 16 years and older.

Proceeds will support the 2021 Charitable Trust educational awards and the Soroptimists’ projects to improve the lives of women and girls in York Region.

“Our organizations share a common goal of mentoring girls and helping women and girls gain a better education so they can have a successful future. More women than ever before need our help, yet the pandemic has made it harder to raise funds to assist them, so it just made sense for us to pool our resources to put on our film festival this year, “ said Lisa Walker, president of Soroptimist York Region.

This event is part of CFUW’s 10th anniversary celebrating International Women’s Day. Some of the club’s book groups are attending the virtual session on March 12, and then discussing these seven short films, featuring strong women, powerful images, and diverse perspectives at their March zoom meetings.
