On Saturday, March 2, York Region Food Network (YRFN) will be hosting its 7th annual Seedy Saturday. Gardening enthusiasts, families, foodies and those who just like to see what’s “growing on” in their community will gather at Newmarket Community Centre & Lions Hall, 200 Doug Duncan Dr. from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Seedy Saturday events have their roots firmly established in Canada, with hundreds now happening nationwide. Started by Seeds of Diversity Canada, the first ever Seedy Saturday happened in 1990 around Valentine's Day because "the seed is the heart of food security."

YRFN’s vision is “Food for health – Food for all”.  This year, YRFN is expanding its Seedy Saturday program by offering free kids in the kitchen workshops for families.

New to gardening? Don't worry, there will be seeds to trade, seeds for sale and friendly experts, delighted to share their knowledge and experience. This year’s theme is “Grow Your Garden Anywhere” and there will be innovative displays and ideas for both indoor and outdoor gardening in small and large spaces that include gutter, palette and container gardens.

Join us for hands-on children’s activities, a seed exchange, ask questions in our resource area, explore the marketplace of vendors and take part in one of our Make and Take sessions and the Speaker’s Corner.  As there is limited seating – pre-register for the Make and Take, https://yrfnseedysatmakeandtake.eventbrite.ca, and Speakers’ Corner:  https://yrfnseedysaturdayspeaker.eventbrite.com.

Our 2019 Speaker’s Corner is proud to feature:

Cathy Nesbitt is a Worm Advocate and Founder of www.cathyscomposters.com, an environmental business specializing in vermicomposting (indoor composting with worms).  She’s won 15+ awards and it’s not surprising with her enthusiastic and engaging personality.

Karen Stephenson’s www.ediblewildfood.com has grown “like a weed” since launching in Aug. 2011.  An author and certified Master Naturalist, Karen’s passion is teaching people about healthy eating by integrating wild food into their daily diet even throughout the winter months.

Dushan Dabrovic from Seed Voyage questions ‘Got Veggies? Want Veggies?’ This new peer-to-peer service (www.seedvoyage.com) puts the haves and have nots together by matching those wanting fresh veggies with nearby growers.

Special thanks to our sponsors:  United Way Greater Toronto, Nature’s Emporium, Dirt Devils Soil Mulch Compost, Home Depot and Starbucks for their ongoing support.
