Thursday, Sept. 29

York Regional Police Truth and Reconciliation vigil: YRP is recognizing the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation with a candlelight vigil to honour the lives lost at residential schools and the survivors, their families and communities still affected by this tragic legacy. The vigil take place at the marine unit headquarters at 57 Lorne St. in Jackson’s Point, Georgina at 8:30 p.m.

Newmarket Main Street Walking Tour: Enjoy a free self-directed walking experience of art, history and business. The artworks of 17 artists from the Newmarket Group of Artists have been paired with 17 historic buildings on Main Street. Take a stroll to discover inspiring artwork and use the QR codes along the way to watch videos on the history of the building and its current business. East Gwillimbury Farmers Market: Every Thursday from 2 to 7 p.m. until Oct. 6, the market is held at the East Gwillimbury Civic Centre, 19000 Leslie St., Sharon.

The Curtain Club Theatre presents Suburban Standoff: The Curtain Club in Richmond Hill has started its 69th season with the hilarious comedy Suburban Standoff. See what happens when a retired couple enjoying a quiet evening at home suddenly become victims of a home invasion by a young couple. It quickly becomes apparent that the invaders are out of their league when they are taught “the ropes” of how to take control by these seniors. Friday, Sept. 30

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation: The Town of Newmarket is inviting the community to join, commemorate, honour, and reflect on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation at 3 p.m. at Fairy Lake Park (Amphitheatre). Kim Wheatley, Shawanaga First Nation Reserve Anishinaabe Ojibway grandmother will offer words, perform hand drumming and prayers.You're invited to wear an orange shirt to honour the children who survived residential schools and remember those who did not. Parking is available at Fairy Lake or anywhere along the Nokiida Trail, or at the town office at 395 Mulock Dr.

Film Fridays at Newmarket Public Library: No registration required, just drop in and enjoy a free movie. Children must be accompanied by an adult. On Sept. 30 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., The Personal History of David Copperfield is a fresh take on Charles Dickens semi-autobiographical masterpiece chronicles the life of its iconic title character as he navigates a chaotic world to find his elusive place within it. Watch the trailer. 

Big Shiny ‘90s ROCK at Market Brewing: Southern Ontario's premier '90s cover band plays from 7:30 to 10 p.m. at Market Brewing Company, 17775 Leslie Street, Unit 4, Newmarket.

We Walk the Line tribute to Johnny Cash, Friday, Sept. 30: Julie Mahendran sings the role of June Carter Cash in this tribute to the music of Johnny Cash at 7:30 p.m. at NewRoads Performing Arts Centre, 505 Pickering Cres., Newmarket. This concert covers the entire career of Johnny Cash from the 1950s at Sun Records, to 2003 with the American Recordings label and includes Johnny's biggest hits, Ring of Fire, Boy Named Sue, I Walk The Line, Folsom Prison Blues, Hurt and the famous duet, Jackson sung with June Carter amongst many other classic songs. Tickets $46.

Saturday night features Gord Bamford, Beverley Mahood, Eric Ethridge, Cody Webb, Elyse Saunders, Farewell Town, John Anderson, and Newlaw. Sunday night features Jason Blaine, David Boyd Janes, Ben Hudson, Cole Bradley, Mac Shepherd, Dayna Reid and Michael Chianelli. Day passes, weekend passes, VIP passes, VIP hotel passes available. 

Saturday, Oct. 1

Artwalk & Studio Tour: The Newmarket Group of Artists (NGA) is holding its free 14th annual artwalk and studio tour at 14 venues in the downtown Newmarket area, displaying work that includes fine art, jewelry, textiles, photography, ceramics and more from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be an information tent set up near Riverwalk Commons where artwalk visitors can pick up a brochure with a map and information about which artists are where. 

Live from the Attic at The Main Street Music Hall - Mojo Train Edition: Mojo Train Band featuring the incredible Manny DeGrandis on Bass, Jesse Karwat on Keyboards, and Jeff Saulnier on Drums and Glenn Marais on guitar and lead vocals at 7 p.m. at Old Flame, 140 Main St. South. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door.

55'n Up Club: The club is celebrating United Nations Older Persons Day with a blue grass band, vendors at 10 a.m. at 1914 Mount Albert Rd., Sharon. 

7th Annual Farm to Fork tour: This year features new additions to the self-guided tour to eight farms, learn from the farmers, and shop local. The tour can be done in any order you wish, but guests are encouraged to start at Sharon Temple Museum where guests will check-in and receive their wrist band, route map and Farm to Fork thermo-tote for every family. Stops include the historic museum, stunning lavender farm, family farm markets, potato farm, apple orchard, grass-fed meat farm, and more! There will also be vendors booths and activities for the kids. The tour runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., 18974 Leslie St, East Gwillimbury. This family friendly event is only $5 per adult and free for children under 12. Tickets should be purchased prior to the event.

Haunted Hollows Scream Park: This 2.5-acre Halloween attraction features live actors, free parking from 7 to 10 p.m. at 18444 Yonge St. East, East Gwillimbury, just north of Upper Canada Mall. Follow twisted trails into the dark forest, where you'll encounter horrifying clowns, ghouls, giant spiders, murderous inmates, ravenous cannibals, deranged mental patients, and demented doctors. Organizers bill this the scariest and most terrifying Halloween attraction in the GTA. Tickets $32.

Newmarket Farmers Market: Farmers, vendors and volunteers create a hive of activity reminiscent of the town’s early years as a new market. A place to buy farm fresh produce, homemade baking, handmade crafts and a great place to meet up with friends over breakfast or lunch. At Riverwalk Commons, 200 Doug Duncan Dr. from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Georgina Farmers Market: Weekly market features about 30 vendors from local farmers and crafters, with live music, yoga in the park and other events at The Link, 20849 Dalton Rd. on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. until Oct. 3.

Coming Up: 

Canadian Concert Classics, Oct. 13, Nov. 12:  At Newmarket's Old Town Hall, enjoy concerts featuring Juno award-winning talent, sponsored by Mercedes Benz Newmarket. On Thursday, Oct. 13 is one of the best new bands of the decade, the Bywater Call seven-piece band. And on Saturday, Nov. 12 is two-time Juno award winner Donne Roberts and his six-piece band. Doors open at 6 p.m. with concerts performed from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. There are only 168 seats available per concert. Tickets, $60, can be purchased at newtix.ca.

Haunted Halloween Trail, Oct. 27 to 29: Take a walk through Newmarket’s Haunted Halloween Trail – if you dare! A portion of the Dave Kerwin Trail (entrance at 325 Woodspring Ave.) will be transformed into an eerie one-kilometre adventure with spooky decorations, lighting, sound effects and actors in costume. Board Gaming: Join local board game enthusiasts every other Friday at Cardinal Press Espresso Bar at 200 Main St. Newmarket at 6 p.m. The games are provided and teachers are available, or you bring your games to teach others. Note from organizers: We don't tend to play a lot of 'traditional' board games such as Monopoly, Clue, Sorry! Let them know what you would like to play when you RSVP and they will bring those games. 

English Country Dance: Join the dance at Trinity United Church, 461 Park Ave. at Main Street, Newmarket from 2 to 4 p.m. Beginners welcome; all dances taught; you don't need to bring a partner. Admission by donation; your first class is free. Join the group on the first, third and (when there is one) fifth Saturday of the month.
