Newmarket council plans to honour local area hockey star Abby Lunney after a gold medal run with Team Canada.

The town is recognizing Lunney at its Jan. 23 meeting after she won gold at the U18 women’s world championship.

Council will also be discussing a study of residential parking, as well as the start of an official plan review.

Here is what NewmarketToday will be following:

Gold medal recognition

Mayor John Taylor will make a presentation to Lunney after her performance at the world championships.

Lunney, who plays with the Central York Girls Hockey Association, had four points in five games en route to a gold medal in Sweden. She scored in the gold medal games, which Canada won over host Sweden 10-0.

She is a resident of Holland Landing, but was born in Newmarket and goes to high school here.

The hockey association will also be recognizing Lunney at a game at the Stronach Aurora Recreation Complex on Jan. 22 at 1:15 p.m.

Parking review

The Town of Newmarket wants to take a new look at residential parking restrictions.

Council is set to approve the terms of reference for a residential parking study. The study will look at current policies and whether they need to be modified, including parking for low and medium residential uses, front yard parking and on-street parking availability.

The study will follow up years of discussions on parking issues. A 2017 report from the town found that the greatest opportunity to increase residential parking supply was to reduce restrictions on on-street parking.

The study process is expected to start in the second quarter of this year, with a final report to come at the end of 2024. A staff report said this is a similar timeline for parking studies done in other municipalities like Guelph, Oshawa and Kingston, lasting 18 to 24 months.

Official plan review

The town is starting a process to update its guiding planning document.

WSP Canada director Gregory Bender will present to the council about the start of an official plan review. The review will see the document updated to address matters such as land use policies, housing and climate change.

The review will also include a study into the downtown core and surrounding area south of Davis Drive, examining opportunities, constraints and characteristics.

The process will take several years, with adoption expected to be in early 2025.

In other planning matters, the town will also hold a special committee of the whole meeting to examine the planning impacts of recent changes at the provincial level. That meeting will take place Jan. 23 at 9 a.m. at the town offices and will be streamed live at newmarket.ca/meetings.

The council meeting will be at 1 p.m on the same day. You can view the stream at newmarket.ca/meetings or attend in person at 395 Mulock Dr. You can also arrange a deputation or send correspondence by emailing [email protected].
