Highlights include securing a permanent home for the Interactive Trench Exhibit and $14,000 raised for the society. The project commemorated Newmarket’s First World War veterans and their sacrifice, and helped to educate and engage Newmarket residents about the town's patriotism in the First World War.

2019 Operating and Capital Budget

Town finance staff will present to council its draft budget recommendations along with an update on the community engagement it has received during phase two of the budget process.

Council will consider three possible annual tax-increase scenarios that, based on the average residential property, would amount to the following per year: $140 (3.95 per cent); $125 (3.20 per cent) and; $121 (2.99) per cent.

A target date of March 4 has been set for final budget approval.

Carnival licence application

Council will be asked to consider granting a licence to D.A. Campbell Amusements Ltd. for an event to be held at the Magna Centre – West Parking Lot from May 9 to 12. The Easter Seals Society of Ontario is sponsoring the carnival, with proceeds going to assist the charitable organization, as well as Southlake Regional Health Centre.

Motion

Councillor Jane Twinney has submitted a motion asking council to consider recognition of the Widdifield family as it relates to land gifted to the Town that has not yet been acknowledged.

The motion will ask that staff be directed to investigate options that will recognize the area east of the river and west of Doug Duncan Drive, that lies between Timothy and Water streets, in some format by a commemorative plaque or other option that acknowledges and demonstrates the background and history of an area known to be Widdifield Park and; that Mike Widdifield of Newmarket be notified of any proposals.
