On Saturday Aug. 17, 2019, the Regional Municipality of York will honour Canadian War veterans by offering free YRT transit service to veterans and immediate family members of deceased veterans.
Veterans and one companion are free to travel all day. Veterans can identify themselves to YRT and Mobility Plus operators by showing any of the following items: uniforms, medals, berets or blazers.
The immediate family of a deceased veteran may also ride free by carrying something that identifies their relationship to the deceased veteran, such as an identification card or service papers.
YRT’s Warriors’ Day service coincides with the 98th Warriors’ Day Parade at the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) in Toronto. This year’s parade also commemorates the 75th anniversary of the D-Day Invasion and the 76th anniversary of the beginning of the Italian Campaign.
Warriors’ Day was established in 1921 through the CNE. The Warriors’ Day Parade is an opportunity to show support for current members of the Canadian armed forces and remember the many veteran heroes who served bravely in defending the freedom of all Canadians.
