UPDATE: Helicopter in fatal Stouffville crash was from North Bay

There are reports the helicopter encountered a mechanical failure before the crash.

The helicopter in the fatal crash this afternoon in a rural area of Whitchurch-Stouffville had left North Bay earlier in the day.

The pilot, the only occupant in the aircraft, was killed in the crash in a wooded area near Warden Avenue and Aurora Road around 2:20 p.m., York Regional Police said.

Elaine Ross, administrator/student coordinator at Essential Helicopter in North Bay, told BayToday.ca, "It has been confirmed apparently that it was one of our aircraft. A senior pilot was involved in the crash. We are working closely with the Transportation Safety Board of Canada at this time."

The helicopter was on route to Buttonville Airport in Markham when it lost contact.

Ross said she could make no further comment.

The pilot, who departed from North Bay around 1:30 p.m., flew into a zone with no visibility due to fog, according to the Canadian Traffic Network.
