SUV crashes through Passion Place storefront in Newmarket

A bystander at the scene said a man was teaching his wife to drive when she accidentally accelerated into the store

No one was injured in a single-vehicle collision early this morning when an SUV left the roadway and crashed through a storefront window at the plaza at Mulock Drive and Bayview Avenue, York Regional Police said.

Sgt. Andy Pattenden said the local force received a call at 8:54 a.m. about the collision, which involved a white SUV that ended up in the adult toy shop, Passion Place, at 16700 Bayview Ave. July 22.

The vehicle’s two occupants, an adult male and female, were not injured and no one was in the store at the time, Pattenden said.

The cause of the collision is not yet known, according to police, and is still under investigation. Central York Fire Services also responded.

A woman at the scene who identified herself as the owner of Passion Place told NewmarketToday that the collision occurred while a man was teaching his wife to drive, and she accidentally accelerated toward the store, jumped the sidewalk and crashed through the glass before the vehicle came to a stop.

Newmarket resident Heather Pollock Hill shared photos of the collision this morning on a local Facebook group to warn others that a portion of the plaza was closed.
