A supermarket in Markham was charged with three offences following a York Region Public Health inspection last week.

Foody Mart, located at 1-5221 Highway 7 East, was inspected March 20 and was found to be not in compliance of a number of items, according to the public health unit.

The report stated that it failed to display food at the proper internal temperature, used the handwashing sink for reasons other than its intended use, failed to properly store food in a manner preventing contamination, failed to provide hot and cold running water, and failed to use food equipment/utensils of readily cleanable form. All of these items were corrected during the inspection.

The inspection report also states the store was not providing adequate protection against pests and ensuring floors and ceilings are kept clean and in good repair.

Food handler education was carried out and a re-inspection was ordered.

At the March 22 re-inspection, additional food handler education took place, the report said. The following day, March 23, the public health unit issued a ticket for the following three offences:

  • Use handwashing station other than for handwashing of employees;
  • Fail to protect food from contamination or adulteration;
  • Hot holding potentially hazardous foods at internal temperature below 60°C.

York Region Public Health regularly inspects businesses under the Health Protection and Promotion Act. It issues charges and orders and reports the results of the inspections weekly.

Foody Mart was the only food establishment charged in the past week. There was also a charge and an order for a personal service establishment.

The region said the reports represent the condition of the establishments at the time of the inspection only and don't speak to its condition at any other time.
