Stories We Love: Huron Heights' festive dinner fills plates and hearts

We're celebrating the new year by sharing the stories that left an impression on us.

The stories we love best do live in us forever. ― J.K. Rowling

As we head into a new year, we're thanking you for the warm welcome of NewmarketToday since our Sept. 4 launch by highlighting some of the stories that we particularly loved telling you about.

You could 'feel the love' the minute you stepped into the room.

The community spirit was tangible, as hundreds of people came together to share a holiday meal at Huron Heights Secondary School's 14th annual Big Festive Dinner Dec. 13.

It's an incredibly heart-warming tradition of goodwill — and a gargantuan task — that the Newmarket high school's Peace Club members annually take on, organizing and raising funds and, not to mention, cooking and cleaning up afterwards, for this annual free festive dinner for about 1,400.

With the help of donors in the community, there are also tables heaped with toiletries, new and used clothing, toys and books for anyone in need.

“We’re not changing the world with this, but we’re helping,” teacher Bill Havercroft said. “It’s a warm, safe place where people are welcomed to share a meal with us — and see the best side of teenagers.”

Well done, Huron Heights, and thank you for your big, entirely unrandom act of kindness that helps ensure Newmarket's heart remains as big as the size of our growing population.
