Specialist students spend day immersed in arts, culture scene

High school students from across York Region made pitches to arts professionals as part of an innovative one-day career program hosted by the Town of Newmarket, York Region District School Board (YRDSB) and York Region Arts Council yesterday

High school students from across York Region had the opportunity to pitch their ideas to promote the local arts and culture scene at an event hosted by the Town of Newmarket, York Region District School Board (YRDSB) and York Region Arts Council yesterday at the Old Town Hall.

Grade 11 and 12 students from nine different high schools spent the day with local artists and arts organizations, arts entrepreneurs and representatives from Newmarket to learn about the different career pathways in the arts, as well as develop methods of promoting the arts in the region.

Organized with the Town of Newmarket and York Region Arts Council, the event is one of several the YRDSB is offering this year in collaboration with community organizations to support innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship training for Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) students.

The SHSM programs let students experience a range of customized, career-focused learning opportunities while working toward their Ontario Secondary School Diploma. YRDSB has 32 secondary schools offering more than 103 separate programs that represent 13 specific sectors of the economy, including arts and culture, business, and health and wellness.
