Southlake Cinemania picks up where TIFF leaves off

Opening night gala rolls out red carpet for supporters of local libraries

You may not be as lucky as the folks at a Toronto coffee shop when Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) darling Ryan Gosling stopped by unexpectedly Monday for a quick chat that made local news. But for the first 200 film buffs through the doors opening night of the Southlake Cinemania TIFF Film Circuit series, there’ll be a glass of wine and small popcorn waiting for you, and more.

The 2018/2019 Southlake Cinemania series kicks off its eight-film run Monday, Sept. 17 from 6 to 10 p.m. with an opening night gala at SilverCity Newmarket Cinemas & XSCAPE Entertainment Centre, 18195 Yonge St., East Gwillimbury.

The northern York Region film fest of sorts screens movies that were presented at TIFF in recent years. It is a partnership between Newmarket Public Library and East Gwillimbury Public Library, with net proceeds funnelled back to the two community facilities.

An eight-film festival pass costs $84, and tickets for individual films can be purchased until noon the day of the showing for $12. A limited number of tickets are available at the door also the day of, but that’ll cost you $15 in exact cash.

Screenings are held the third Monday of the month, excluding December and when holidays conflict, with show time at 7 p.m.

The opening night film is The Leisure Seeker, starring Helen Mirren and Donald Sutherland on a road trip in an old recreational vehicle (RV) affectionately dubbed the leisure seeker.

But before the lights go down, guests will have the chance to win door prizes, including a $150 Nature’s Emporium gift certificate, a tour and six-wine tasting from Holland Marsh Wineries, and a three-month coffee supply from Newmarket’s coffee roasters My Indie Coffee.
